The Position
This is a full-time fixed term contract position for the period 8 July 2013 to 29 November 2013.
The successful applicant will lead and manage the schools Art programs from years 8 to 12 and will be energetic and enthusiastic in promoting the visual arts within the school community.
Applicants should have multi-media experience and be familiar with the National Curriculum and assessment standards.

Position Description
1. PURPOSE
All Heads of Department are members of the School Curriculum Team and are responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum, with oversight of teaching and learning that is provided for each student in respective curriculum areas.
2. RESPONSIBILITY
As the delegated leader of a Department in the School, the Head of Department is responsible to the Deputy Principal – Director of Teaching and Learning.
3 ROLE ACCOUNTABILITY
3.1 Team Leadership:
To participate actively in the Curriculum Team and to exercise effective team leadership in the development and support of their Department, in line with the concept of Teams and Team Leadership that underpins the organisational structure of the School.

3.6 Curriculum Leadership:
In regard to the teaching and learning that occurs within the department the Head of Department is responsible for:
3.6.1 Ensuring that all subjects and courses have appropriate programs that are designed to meet the needs of the students and the requirements of the QSA;.
3.6.2 Leading the department team in the implementation of the ongoing collaborative review of Department programs and practices;
3.6.3 Ensuring that students in each Department course have ample opportunities to achieve the desired outcomes of the course;
3.6.4 Ensuring that the members of the department are aware of, and compliant with, all QSA requirements in regard to course specifications, mandatory hours, assessment tasks, assessment criteria and accurate record keeping;
3.6.5 Providing leadership and support to teachers in the development and implementation of a variety of best practice teaching and learning strategies;
3.6.6 Working in collaboration with the Diverse Learners team to ensure that teachers have appropriate support to provide students with special needs with effective access to the curriculum and to ensure those students with particular gifts and talents in relation to department courses are appropriately identified, supported and challenged;
3.6.7 Implementing effective practices within the Department for the regular monitoring of student progress and academic standards;
3.6.8 Overseeing the follow-up of students’ results by subject teachers and ensure that students who do not meet the assessment criteria are given the opportunity to improve and are encouraged to renew themselves academically;
3.6.9 Ensuring that all Department members have the opportunity to engage in processes that are designed to monitor and report on the academic progress of each student and the academic standard being achieved by the Department as a whole;
3.6.10 Overseeing courses offered within the Department in regard to the provision of appropriate academic challenge for each student;
3.6.11 Ensuring that student reports reflect syllabus/program desired outcomes;
3.6.12 Working closely with the Library and Information Services Director and the Information Communication Technology Director to ensure that the department has access to appropriate information resources.
3.7 Management and Administration of the Department:
In relation to the operation of the Department and the effective support and supervision of Team members, the Head of Department is responsible for:
3.7.1 Ensuring that all new department staff members are inducted into the Vision,
policies and routines of the Department;
3.7.2 Ensuring that the Department is engaged in the ongoing development and review of
department practice;
3.7.3 Ensuring that all Department staff members are informed about subject specific
developments and changes;
3.7.4 Encouraging the Department members to engage in appropriate professional
development activities to keep them abreast of current developments and best practice
in the subject ;
3.7.5 Working with all Department staff members to ensure that they engage in professional
review and develop and implement their own professional development plan;
3.7.6 Meeting with each member of the Department team at least once each year and to visit
Department members’ classrooms where appropriate;
3.7.7 Collaborating with all Department members to ensure that they are adequately supported in the development and application of appropriate classroom teaching and management practices;
3.7.8 Facilitating regular Department meetings;
3.7.9 Participating in the School budget process to ensure that the Department needs are appropriately represented in order that the Department budget allows for regular upgrading of resources;
3.7.10 Ensuring that appropriate booklists and stationery lists are developed for each subject in line with Department and school policy;
3.7.11 Contributing to the process of allocating students and teachers to classes where appropriate;
3.7.12 Participating in the selection process for the appointment of new department staff;
3.7.13 Supporting teachers in the development and implementation of effective pedagogy and
classroom management practices;
3.7.14 Supervising and supporting Department staff in the exercise of their primary responsibilities in regard to classroom and student management;
3.7.15 Working in collaboration with classroom teachers, the Deputy Principal – Director of Pastoral Care and the relevant Year Level Coordinator to address student management issues;
3.7.16 Supervising the work of any ancillary staff working in the Department;
3.7.17 Working with Department staff to ensure that workplace health and safety requirements and practices are met as they particularly apply to the work of the Department;
3.7.18 Managing department resources;
3.7.19 Overseeing excursions, field trips, external bookings and the use of guest speakers;
3.7.20 Ensuring, in collaboration with the appropriate Year Level Coordinators, that students are provided with accurate and relevant subject information and guidance so they can make informed subject choices;
3.7.21 Liaising with the Deputy Principal – Director of Teaching and Learning and the Principal in relation to course viability and (alternate) delivery;
3.7.22 Overseeing the accuracy of teachers’ reporting;
3.7.23 Ensuring that Department members maintain clean, tidy and safe classrooms which support student learning.
4. LENGTH OF TENURE
A Head of Department is appointed for a period of four years renewable for a further four years on completion of a performance review. After the completion of 8 years, the role may be advertised. The incumbent may be re-appointed upon submission of a successful application.
5. APPRAISAL/REVIEW CONDITIONS
The appointee to this position will be required to undergo a yearly Professional Review with the Principal and a comprehensive Performance Appraisal towards the end of the appointment contract time. The Performance Appraisal will be conducted at the request of the Principal and the School Board.
