Curriculum

English

The course for years 8 and 9 is designed to promote the students' proficiency, control, confidence and enjoyment of language so that they can participate effectively and constructively in their world.  In studying this subject students use English to:

  • express and assist in fulfilling their everyday needs
  • to organise their thoughts and learn about the world
  • to reflect upon their experiences, thoughts and feelings, and share these with others
  • to obtain and provide information, direction and advice
  • to make decisions and solve problems; to evaluate the relevance, quality and perspectives of their own and others' speech, writing and visual communication
  • to appreciate and contribute towards their own and others' cultural heritages

Both Senior and Junior English courses are shaped by the understanding that students learn about language while using it to comprehend and compose specific texts, either written, visual or spoken/signed, within particular cultural and social contexts. It is important students understand that language is a social and creative process.
